Spice Up Your Landscape This Winter

Once autumn comes and the outdoor furniture goes away you start feeling a little uninspired. Gone are the days of bright coloured leaves, warm sun, and fresh cut grass. Instead, you're left with a bleak winter wonderland (or just plain boring browns, whites, and greys). It's easy to get bored with your landscape during the winter months.

Wondering how to take your outdoor space from humdrum to amazing? Here are a couple of things that you can do to bring life back into your garden this winter.

Outdoor Lighting

Let’s face it, when winter comes, it can be difficult to go out after dark. That is why choosing the right landscape lighting with your Niagara landscaping contractor can be a crucial component of making your home safe and enjoyable when you want to spend more time outside. Yes, it's freezing outside (for us Canadians), but low voltage led lighting is the perfect solution for winter landscaping. Low voltage means that you don't have to worry about your lights overheating and you can choose from a variety of different styles, from string lights to spotlights and everything in between. You can choose from a variety of colors and sizes as well. Low voltage LED landscape lighting creates a beautiful, soft glow that's perfect for illuminating pathways, walkways, trees, and shrubs to create a cozy feeling when arriving or departing your home. Another popular choice is antique style streetlamps or even carriage lights which give instant charm and make you feel like you're walking through little Paris by night!

Winter lighting isn’t just for the holidays but when most people think of Christmas lights, they think of indoor Christmas lights. We don’t blame them. It is human nature to want to keep Christmas where it belongs for us – indoors. It’s cozy, it’s friendly and it has hot chocolate (at least in our world). But that is a mistake for us landscapers in Niagara. The one thing that is missing from indoor Christmas lighting is the natural beauty from Mother Nature. Don’t let your yard miss out on something like that. Residential and commercial exterior lights are a great way to add visual interest to your property in the midst of gloomy winter days. These beautiful and inviting lights will bring attention to the outside of your home when you most want it. Call us today about installing a sparkly addition to your own landscape!

Outdoor Winter Plants

Fall is the perfect time to plant in your garden. There are many hardy varieties so if you're looking for plants/shrubs that will survive the cold weather and still look good throughout the year, here's a list of our favorites:

Boxwood is a hardy evergreen shrub. The boxwood has light green leaves and produces small white flowers in spring. Boxwoods are a great choice for small gardens because they can be pruned into a hedge or more formal shape, depending on your preference.

Holly plants are the perfect choice for adding welcome colour to your garden in the dead of winter. They're evergreen, so they'll be there throughout the year, even when other plants aren't looking so good. These incredibly versatile plants that can be grown either indoors or outdoors, depending on your climate and how much sunlight is available to them. They're also super-easy to maintain—just prune back a little bit each spring after blooming and you'll have a lush and resilient plant all season long!

Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a deciduous shrub with heart-shaped leaves that has yellow flowers in the fall. It's native to North America, growing in zones 4 to 8. You can use witch hazel as a perennial shrub or an annual flowering plant. Witch hazel is best planted in sun or light shade, but it will grow well in part shade as well.

Dwarf Alberta spruces are soft blue-green conifers with long lasting, fragrant, and showy flowers. They can be grown as a hedge or in a container. The plant's shape can be pruned to keep at a certain height by cutting off the branches that grow too tall or thin. Dwarf Alberta spruce trees can also be planted in groups or alone.

White pine is a fast-growing conifer native to North America. It’s evergreen, and it has a good resistance to disease so it’s easy to care for. The trees thrive in windy sites, making them ideal for coastal areas where there are often strong winds or high humidity. This plant also does well in areas with cold winters but warm summers because of its ability to withstand extreme temperatures. Some varieties of White Pine trees have compact growing habits that are suitable for small gardens.
