With spring here, now is a great time to do some outdoor landscaping!

If you have landscaping plans this season, our Tree Amigos team wants to make sure all your hard work pays off. Here’s our list of five common landscaping mistakes and what you can do to avoid them.

Incorrect Planting Methods

We have many advantages when it comes to landscaping in Niagara. Our plant hardiness zones allow us to grow an impressive variety of plants and greenery. Even so, it’s important to place your plants according to what best suits their needs.

If you choose plants based on how they’ll look in a certain area of your property, just make sure they’ll be happy there too. Every plant has growing requirements, such as how much sunlight they need, the type of soil required, and how much space they need to thrive. Doing some research beforehand will help you find the best plants for your outdoor spaces.

Seasonal Changes

Another important factor is choosing the right plants for all seasons. Some plants love our Niagara summers, but cannot survive our winters.

Depending on where you landscape, plants can be more susceptible to frost, such as wide-open areas with little cover. Be mindful of the seasonal changes so you can choose plants that will survive for more than just one season.

Improper Lawn Cutting

Lawn care is another area where it’s common to make landscaping mistakes. If your lawn looks overgrown, you might be tempted to give it a shorter cut. Unfortunately, doing this can impact the health of your lawn.

We recommend only cutting the top third of your grass, at least for the first few cuts. This lets your lawn get established and prevents dead spots. Into the drier summer season, let your grass grow longer to help it stay green and lush.

Poor Plant Maintenance

On a similar note, plants can also be susceptible to overcutting and poor pruning methods. Some plants require pruning in the early spring, while others may need pruning before the winter sets in. Others may only require minimal pruning because they rely on old branches for new growth. Read up on the recommended time of year to prune so your plants can stay healthy all year long.

Wildlife Concerns

For Niagara residents, keeping the wildlife out of yards and gardens can be a challenge! Certain plants can be attractive to critters and leave you with a mess. We suggest choosing plants that are less appealing to pests that you don’t want on your property. And if you need recommendations, our Niagara landscaping experts are happy to help.
